Loads o' lads.
DC King of Dublin officially went off last weekend, the latest installment of DC’s unique amateur skateboarding contest at street spots all over the world. After two days of competition at two separate street spots in Dublin, congratulations go to Keith Walsh on his win and his share of the 5,000 Euro purse.
For day 1, the locals came out to shred Portobello. An infamous spot with ledges and a couple of little water gaps, it’s been shut down lately—illegal to skate there. For DC King of Dublin organizers cut the nobs and buttered up the ledges with some fresh metal. The scene was awesome—tons of people, most of the DC team, a huge pig on a spit to feed the crowd, and a classic Irish pub next door. Everyone seemed stoked to have a skate event like this in their town.
There were definite standouts, but the judges purposefully kept the score sheets secret until Sunday’s final, which was decidedly heavier. Wood Quay is a long 12 stair with a new handrail added to the middle of it to mix it up. Men and boys were separated, with some of the skaters from yesterday’s ledge spot not even showing up to skate. Unless the ams were on their street game, they were out. Hundreds of people showed up to watch the battle.
Scores were tabulated and the top three went to Keith Walsh, Joe Hill, and Cian Eades respectively. For their efforts, they spit $5000 Euros, a huge take for unsigned ams in Dublin. It was an unprecedented opportunity to shred some otherwise-illegal street spots, get some exposure, and earn some Euros.
Special thanks to all the locals and skate shops (especially G1) that made DC King of Dublin a legendary success.
The 2009 DC King of Series now moves on to Vancouver and Rome before ending in Chicago in October.
